4 Questions Every Small Business Owner Should Ask
The most recent topic at the OSDC Means Business Happy Hour Series was all about knowing when it’s time to grow. For small business owners, scaling too fast or without the right foundation can lead to burnout, financial strain, or even collapse. How do you avoid that? OSDC Board Member TJ Eveland facilitated an interactive discussion about these four essential questions to determine if you’re truly ready to grow.
1. What is my vision
Growth needs direction. It’s tempting to chase bigger numbers, like more customers, more revenue, or more visibility. But without a clear vision, it’s easy to lose focus or stretch yourself too thin.
Think about where you actually want your business to go:
- What does success look like in 1, 3, or 5 years?
- What kind of impact are you trying to make?
- What kind of culture or brand are you building?
When your vision is clear, every decision, from marketing to hiring, has a purpose behind it.
2. What constraints are prohibiting this vision?
Every business hits roadblocks. The key is being honest about what’s getting in your way. That might be limited cash flow, clunky systems, not enough hours in the day, or just feeling stuck in the weeds.
Some good reflection points:
- Are you constantly putting out fires instead of planning ahead?
- Are outdated tools or processes slowing you down?
- Do you feel like you’re working more but moving less?
The truth is, growth doesn’t solve problems, it magnifies them. Identifying and addressing these constraints now puts you in a better position to scale later.
3. What resources do I need to achieve my vision?
Once you know where you want to go and what’s holding you back, the next step is figuring out what you need to get there. That might mean financial support, technology upgrades, mentorship, or just better systems to streamline your workflow.
Some things to consider:
- Is it time to apply for funding or pursue investors?
- Do you need to upgrade your tools, CRM, or website?
- Would bringing in a coach or consultant help you build a strategy?
You don’t have to do it all yourself, but you do need to know what will truly move the needle.
4. Do I have the right staff to carry out this work?
Your team is your engine. The people you started with might not be the same people you need to take your business to the next level, and that’s okay. What’s important is making sure your staff has the skills, mindset, and capacity to grow with you.
Ask yourself:
- Are the right people in the right roles?
- Do they understand and support the vision?
- Do they have what they need to succeed, or are they stretched too thin?
- Are there new roles you should be hiring for now to support future goals?
Growth doesn’t just require more hands on deck, it requires the right ones. Making investments in key staff, or making tough decisions about which people are no longer suited to the business, is a critical component of achieving your growth mission.
You can use these four questions as a framework for thinking about growth with intention. Whether you’re just starting to consider expansion or you’re already mapping out your next move, make sure the foundation is solid.
